Rajasthan

Forts, palaces, and desert nights

Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic. It is the India of forts on hilltops, palaces that float on lakes, and cities painted blue, pink, and
gold. It is also one of the most visited regions in the country, which means the real reward goes to travellers who look just beyond the
obvious stops

What makes it special

This is a land built on stories. Every fort has a siege, every palace a romance, every haveli a family that rose and fell. The scale is genuinely staggering, from the honey-coloured walls of Jaisalmer rising out of the Thar Desert to the marble pavilions of Udaipur reflected in still water.

Where to go

Jaipur for the pink city and its palaces. Udaipur for lakes and the most romantic evenings in India. Jodhpur for the blue old town beneath the mighty Mehrangarh Fort. Jaisalmer for desert dunes, camel camps, and nights under more stars than you knew existed. Add Bundi or Shekhawati if you want the quieter, painted Rajasthan that most tours miss.

Best time to visit

October to March, comfortably. The desert summers are punishing, so unless you have a specific reason, avoid April to June.

Insider tip

Spend one night in a desert camp away from the city. A Rajasthan sunset over the dunes, followed by folk music and a sky full of stars, is the memory you will keep.
