Bali, Indonesia

Temples, rice terraces, and easy luxury

Bali is one of those rare places that lives up to its own legend. It has been written about, photographed, and dreamed of so often that
you half expect to be disappointed. Most people are not. The island has a way of turning travel into a feeling rather than a checklist.

What makes it special

Bali blends spirituality and ease in a way few places manage. Temples sit on clifftops and in rice fields. Offerings appear on doorsteps every morning. And yet the island is also deeply comfortable, with a wellness and design culture that has quietly influenced the rest of the world.

Where to go

Ubud for green rice terraces, art, and yoga. Uluwatu for clifftop temples and dramatic sunsets. Canggu for surf and cafés. The Nusa islands, a short boat ride away, for clearer water and fewer crowds. Bali rewards travellers who pick two or three bases rather than trying to see everything.

Best time to visit

April to October is the dry season and the easiest time to travel. The wet season, November to March, is greener and quieter, withshort, heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain.

Insider tip

Visit the famous temples and terraces at sunrise. By mid-morning the crowds arrive. The first light is when Bali feels like the place you imagined.
