Sri Lanka

Tea country, ancient cities, and southern beaches

Sri Lanka is a small island that behaves like a large country. In a single, compact trip you can ride a train through emerald tea hills,
climb an ancient rock fortress, watch leopards in a national park, and end your days on a warm southern beach. Few places offer that
much range so close together.

What makes it special

It is the variety, and the ease of moving between it. Distances are short, the people are famously warm, and the landscape shifts quickly from coast to highlands to ancient ruins. Sri Lanka feels like several holidays folded into one.

Where to go

Kandy and Ella for misty tea country and the famous hill-country train. Sigiriya for the ancient rock fortress rising out of the jungle. Yala or Wilpattu for leopards and elephants. The south coast, from Mirissa to Tangalle, for whales, surf, and slow beach days. Galle Fort for colonial streets and sunset walls.

Best time to visit

The island has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, so timing depends on where you go. December to March suits the south and west and the hill country. May to September suits the east coast. There is almost always somewhere with good weather.

Insider tip

The Kandy to Ella train is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. Book a second-class seat with open windows rather than the sealed first-class carriage. The breeze and the open doors are the whole point.
